課程概述 |
Course Description:
This course aims to evaluate translation in the context of intercultural understanding, especially of the dissemination of theory as a force of social and cultural transformation. This will be done through (1) a review of theoreticaly informed accounts of translation, and (2) a new reading of such accounts to highlight the affinities between literary translation and the translation of theorectical discourses.

課程目標 |
Course Objectives:
Concentrating on the demands of the translation of theory, not just “high thoery” but all varieties of knowledge discourse, we intend to develop Carol Maier’s insightful formulation of translation as “theoretical practice”: translation is most meaningful when its end does not lie in mere “products” arrived at through substitution of equivalents, but in the exploration and discovery of possibilities. We will unpack the ramifications of this claim to the in-betweenness of translation and show its experiential and theoretical justification. Students are expected to develop a sense of translation as subsisting in an “accoustic” space of personal and impersonal intensities. Such a space is indispensable for cultural and theoretical cross-fertilization.
